Lessons ยท Unit 1: The staff
Lines and spaces
Music is written on a staff: five lines and the four spaces between them. Both lines and spaces count. They are numbered from the bottom up: the first line is the lowest.
A note is on a line when the line passes through the middle of its head. It is in a space when the head sits between two lines, touching both. Look at the middle of the head, not at the stem.
In this drill a single note appears. Say whether it is on a line or in a space. Speed matters: the aim is to see it, not to count it.
Drill
The session goes on until every skill below is mastered: at least 10 answers, at most 40. Your progress carries over between sessions.
