Lessons · Unit 10: Key signatures

Reading with sharps in the key

With a key signature, a note written without a sign may sound altered. In D major, every F is F♯ and every C is C♯, in every octave and every bar. When reading, look at the signature once and remember which notes it changes.

In D major: D, E, F♯, G
A, B, C♯, D

The exercise shows a note in G, D or A major and you give its full name.
