Lessons · Unit 11: Rhythm III

Syncopation

A syncopation is a note that starts on a weak part of the bar and is held across the strong beat that follows, which never gets an attack. The classic shape is eighth – quarter – eighth: beat 2 is not struck, it is sustained.

Eighth, quarter, eighth: beat 2 is not struck

Count "1 and 2 and" out loud and tap on "1", the "and" of 1 and the "and" of 2. You will feel your body wanting to tap on 2: that is exactly the reflex to tame.
