Whole notes and rests
A whole note lasts four beats: in 4/4 it fills the whole bar. Every note value has a rest of the same length that is counted but not sounded: quarter rest, half rest, whole rest.
Rests are counted like notes but never tapped. The usual mistake is tapping on the rest; the second usual mistake is losing count and coming in late after it.
