Lessons · Unit 9: Accidentals
The sharp
Between two neighbouring keys on the keyboard lies a semitone, the smallest distance in our music. The notes you know so far, the naturals, are not all equally far apart: from E to F and from B to C there is a semitone; between the other neighbours there is a tone, that is, two semitones, with a black key in between.
A sharp (♯) raises the note by a semitone. It is written before the note, exactly on its line or space. F♯ sounds between F and G: on the piano it is the black key between them. E♯ exists too: it is the same key as F.
In this exercise the note may or may not carry a sharp. Look at the position first, then at whether there is a sign before it.
